The first thought that comes to mind when your child is wearing inappropriate clothing is to just tell them that they are not permitted to wear those kinds of clothes. Of course, it is your kid and how you want to deal with them is your business, but you may be doing more harm than good. If you can think back and remember being a teen yourself, you will remember that you had your own styles too and you didn't want your parent telling you what to wear. Look at things a little differently if you can.
Here's an example of where you really should get involved with your child's clothing choices. There is a disturbing fashion trend for very young girls to wear very low cut tops and short skirts or low rise pants that expose their belly buttons. When you couple this with the tops being so low that they are revealing a great deal of cleavage you have a recipe for disaster. Even though they may not be intentionally doing so, this type of dress exposes them to older boys and men who may be sexually attracted because of the provocative dress. In my opinion, it is entirely appropriate to tell them to change their clothes.
Try to stay up on the trends that teens are into, I know it can be hard since sometimes they change every few months. Buy fashion magazines for them and encourage them to explore some of the trends that are not into revealing so much skin. By taking an interest in their fashion trends you can actually create a closer relationship between you, especially if the child is a daughter.
Another situation you need to be aware of is that if your child is in high school their school may have their own rules that limit the wear of certain clothing, I know at our local high school they do not allow the baggy pants style and girls are required to wear their skirts a certain length and may not expose their tummies. You want to keep up with these rules as violation of them could result in suspension.
