Trimester One
The first trimester lasts from the time you conceive to twelve weeks of gestation. Morning sickness is one of the major features of this trimester. Fatigue, dizziness, and sensitivity to surroundings are also common during this time. Hormonal changes make your sense of smell very keen, so you become sensitive to strong odors. Certain foods may cause nausea. You may feel the cravings for other foods. Since the digestive system is affected due to overall slowdown in metabolism, you may find that gas, indigestion and heartburn are frequent problems.
You can combat all these symptoms by eating small meals, eating crackers and light snacks, and avoiding smoking and caffeine. You may feel the need to visit the restrooms more frequently. Be sure to maintain hygiene and drink plenty of water. This is also a good time to start maintaining a pregnancy journal. A journal helps you keep track of the progress of your pregnancy and the physical changes you undergo.
Trimester Two
The second trimester is the easiest of the pregnancy trimesters. You can relax, because nausea and fatigue will not be as bad as they were during the first trimester. The baby grows faster during this stage. Your doctor will be able to monitor the baby's heartbeat during the second trimester. Mood swings could be a concern. This can be tackled with good food and exercise. If you feel depressed consistently, consult your doctor.
Trimester Three
The fetus grows and develops fully during this trimester. Its appearance changes in many ways. Fine hair called lanugo covers its body. You may feel cramps during this stage. Fatigue also returns after a smooth second trimester. The heart, lungs, and eyes of the baby develop fully during this stage. The brain also develops and the head becomes larger. The baby gains weight due to the fat deposits under her skin. Later this fat helps her keep warm in the world outside.
At the end of the pregnancy trimesters, the baby is born.
Proper knowledge about the pregnancy trimesters can help you prevent problems such as nausea and hypertension. Regular visits to the doctor will give you more confidence and help you have a healthy term.
