Air conditioners have become increasingly popular in rural areas over the previous decade. They are relatively inexpensive, but very heavy to carry, and can be installed in a window or outside if you prefer central air in under a few hours. Air conditioners come in a variety of sizes but you should not be fooled by their size because even a small air conditioner can cool an entire apartment building.

Choosing An Air Conditioner

There are many different type of air conditioners to choose from but they can typically be boiled down to free standing units. These typically will sit in your window and take air from the outside cool it and blow it inside your home.

The other option is to go for a central air unit. These are more expensive and require professional installation. The largest benefit that you will see from using a central air unit isn't something you can see at all - it's the reduced noise level because the unit is located in your yard. Of course, being outside carries with it added concerns - you will need to keep the unit free of snow and other obstructions in order for it to work properly. It also is considerably more expensive than a free standing unit.

Get An Air Conditioner Cover

If you wish to save yourself a lot of trouble, you might consider investing into a cover for your air conditioner to protect it from the elements and things that could clog it like snow or leaves. The best covers also help to minimize noise output. Let's face it, no one likes a noisy unit and a cover goes a long way in reducing the noise.

Remember To Change Your Filter

Everyone knows that any dust that passes through the filter ends up back in your living space. This can be very irritating to allergy sufferers and anyone else who is sensitive to dust and airborne contaminants. Dust slowly collects inside the filter that must be changed once every six months. If you do not change the filter regularly it can cause your air conditioner to not work anymore. In addition, you and your family might not be breathing clean air.

Educate Yourself

Often times you can look through consumer magazines and find various air conditioners rated on a variety of factors such as reliability, quality, ease of use etc... You can also do a search online to find air conditioner reviews, some sites also allow users to add their own comments and share their experiences with a particular unit or a particular company.
