Sitting close to the button is called being in the early position and being farther away is called being in the late position. Both of these positions have their advantages and disadvantages. By being forced to make a bet early in the round, you don't have as much time to study your own cards and figure out the odds. However, you can also put some of your opponents at a disadvantage because when you place a bet, they can fold if they think their cards are not very good, which eliminates some of your competition. At the same time, these players have more opportunity to study your expressions and mannerisms when you look at your cards and they may be able to pick up on some of your tells to give them an idea of whether or not you may be bluffing.
In the late position, you have plenty of time to study both your cards and the other players at the table with you. You also know the bets of the other players and are able to make a decision whether or not you will place a bet. The disadvantage is that you may have good cards, but when your turn comes you may have changed your mind and not bother to place a bet at all.
Make sure you think things through before you place a bet. You may hold cards that mean you have to draw, which means that you need to have some of the community cards to help you make a flush or a straight. You also need to think of the possible combinations of cards that could beat you in the turn or the river depending on the cards the other players are holding.
You also need to portray a good table image. As you are weighing the pros and cons of placing a bet, raising a bet or of folding, all the other players are watching and studying you. The table image you project can determine whether you win or lose a hand. Keep track of how often you raise a bet and how often you call. If you do this quite often, the other players will see you as an aggressive player. You also should decline to show your cards, unless there is a showdown in which all players must show your cards. When you decline to show the cards, then the other players won't be able to find out if you bluffed or not.
