A supplement is considered something added to the diet to help make up for a nutritional deficiency. It can include vitamins, minerals, herbs and amino acids. There are hundreds of sports nutritional supplements that can be taken, a majority of them perfectly legal. However, there are also several things that sports nutrition does not include that athletes attempt to get away with.
Often times it is the illegal enhancements that get the most publicity giving people the impression that all supplements should be banned. Not only are certain supplements banned because of the magnitude they can have on a persons performance, but also because of the safety for athletes. What many athletes do not realize is that a large amount of sports supplements are dangerous in their own.
Many sport nutrition products are not required to meet the safety requirements that over the counter drugs are required to meet. Because of this it can almost be assumed that we, the consumers, are the testers for the product. The products are not required to meet any kind of safety testing prior to going to the market, which raises many flags amongst athletes and protestors against sports supplements. This is not to say that all supplements should be avoided.
The best route to go is to do the appropriate research and talk to others that have used the sports supplement you are considering. It is guaranteed that your not the only one considering using a supplement; the nutrition supplement industry has grown into a multi-million dollar business because of the pressure of athletes to stay with their competitors.
Another thing to consider before taking a sport nutrition is the impact the product will have on your performance. Just as most supplements are not required to meet most safety requirements, they also are not required to meet any product effectiveness or purity ratings. This could falsely lead many athletes to take a supplement for weeks without any signs of enhancement. This is another reason why it is vital you do your research prior to taking any sports supplement.
There is no question the pressure to perform in the sports industry has become ever so important. Because of this, many athletes are taking some kind of sport nutrition or supplement of some kind. If you are feeling the pressure or considering taking a sport nutrition, it is vital that you do the appropriate research to avoid any health risks or wasting your time from a falsely promoted product.
