Here's an interesting story which illustrates the importance of making a good first impression.

The other day I was at my friend's house where he was describing his troubles with filling a slot for a summer rental. During the process of interviewing new tenants, he brings them out for a night of drinking. Now this is done in an attempt to see what the people "are really like".

What's interesting was my friend was talking about this one guy who proceeded to get drunk and insult every single female roommate. Needless to say he was NOT asked to move in.

So what's the moral behind this story?

Well this guy made a BAD first impression. Whenever you meet people (especially women) you literally have a few minutes to give people an opportunity to judge you. If you do a poor job, then it'll be hard to overcome this first impression.

And this is especially true when it comes to women.

If you meet a woman and do something to offend her, then you can say goodbye to ANY chance of attracting or dating her.

Now before I discuss how to recover from a bad first impression, let me quickly mention something. There are some women who have no sense of humor. If you're just making a few jokes and she gets really offended, then you've learned a valuable lesson. Perhaps this woman has no sense of humor. By quickly identifying this trait, you've learned that she probably won't make a good dating partner.

But there will be times when you might go overboard and say something to offend her. If that's the case, then you need to rectify things. The important thing to remember is to maintain your higher status while giving her an apology.

If you want to date this woman, then an apology must be issued. However if you want to act like a man you must avoid giving the apology in a supplicating or pleading tone.

Instead you need to talk to her privately and explain things in a calm and rational tone. Just explain that you were trying to joke with her and see if she has a sense of humor. You were going for a laugh, but she didn't find it funny. Then say you're sorry that you hurt her feelings.

The important thing about this method is it directly confronts the bad first impression and shows that you can admit you're wrong without losing any power. Now if this woman doesn't accept your apology then she isn't really worth dating. Simply move on and find a woman who has a better sense of humor.

If you find yourself in a situation where you've accidentally offended a woman, then you might owe her an apology. Just use the technique I've described in this article and you'll quickly identify the problem, address it, and then continue on with the conversation.
