The Future of Washing Machines

Washing machines have been around for many years, there have not really been too many innovations since that time, the most likely probably having to be the combination of both the washing machine and the tumble dryer. But carefully watching the Electrolux Design Lab contest over the last few weeks (the Electrolux Design Lab is basically a yearly contest whereas students can show off there kitchen appliances inventions and designs). I have seen a great innovative idea coming to light, which also comes with a catchy name the "iBasket". iBasket is a washing basket as well as an innovative self activated washing machine.

The iBasket has ultimately taken its name from the widely popular iPhone, as it has the capabilities of wifi access and artificial technology. So now we will take a closer look at how this technology puts itself to work.

Basically the item is a wash basket basin; as we all know we place our dirty laundry into a basket and then either once or twice a week wash the dirty items of clothing. What this basket does is also acts as a washing machine, it has various sensors around the basket and when the clothes reach a certain height, the lid automatically shuts and a wash cycle starts. Once the wash is complete you will then be notified via wifi, so basically you can carry on with your everyday jobs while you do your laundry.

So with a great unique concept such as this, it begs the question of, what does the future hold for washing machines? Well this is not the first concept I have seen as of late. I have seen a washing machine that instead of using water it washes the clothes with natural rock extracts, therefore making it very environmentally friendly. I have also come across a soap nut washing machine, which does not use detergent but rather uses a soap nut extract which again is very friendly to the environment.

But these pieces of technology never seem to catch on, I think the real reason is because society does not want or need washing innovations. They are happy with the way that there washing machines clean and refresh clothes, so in the short term I do not think that there will be any major shift in the way we use washing machines, but who knows what we might see in the next coming years.
